What are Cambridge English Young Learners Exams?

Cambridge English Young Learners exams test the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These exams give a consistent measure of how well 7–12 year–old's. Tests are designed to make learning a happy event full of fun and activities and children are encouraged by working towards certificates and earning ‘shields’ that record their progress. There are three different versions of the Cambridge English Young Learners exam:

Pre A1 Starters (YLE Starters)

Pre A1 Starters is the first of three Cambridge English Qualifications designed for young learners. These tests provide the children with the opportunity to explore everyday written and spoken English and are a rewarding way for them to gain confidence and build up their English.

Tests are designed in a welcoming approach to young learners where familiar topics are on play. These tests focus on the skills needed to communicate effectively in English through listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Pre A1 Starters: How can it help take learners their first step forwards? Learners can

◈ Get an understanding of basic English content on the internet.
◈ Start enjoying books, songs, television, and films in English.
◈ Make friends globally

Why choose Pre A1 Starters?

◈ There’s no pass or fail – every child gets a Cambridge English certificate which celebrates their achievements.
◈ The test uses realistic everyday situations to bring learning to life.
◈ The test covers all major varieties of English (e.g. British English, American English).

A1 Movers (YLE Movers)

A1 Movers is the second of three Cambridge English Qualifications designed for young learners. These tests provide the children with the opportunity to explore the tests introduce children to everyday written and spoken English and are an excellent way for them to gain flow and fluency in their use of English.

The tests are written around familiar topics and focus on the skills needed to communicate effectively in English through listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

A1 Movers: How can it help take learners their second step forwards? Learners can

◈ Understand basic instructions or take part in simple conversations.
◈ Understand basic notices, instructions, or information.
◈ Complete basic forms and write notes, including times, dates, and places.

The tests are written around familiar topics and focus on the skills needed to communicate effectively in English through listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

A2 Flyers: How can it help take learners their third step forwards? Learners can

◈ Understand simple written English.
◈ Communicate in familiar situations.
◈ Understand and use basic phrases and expressions.
◈ Interact with English speakers who talk slowly and clearly.
